My students need sheep organs, an epson document camera, and a collection of books to complete an in-depth book study and examination of anatomy and physiology.
Feeling froggy? We're not! The only frogs in our lab this year will be virtual ones. We love our virtual software, but we still want to cut! If we only had a brain, a heart, and the nerve, we could earn our M.D. (Master of Dissection) degree.
We are the only public high school in a large rural county.
With family farms, small businesses, military families, coal mining families, and a host of other backgrounds, our kids are as diverse as our curriculum. We pride ourselves on our programs in academics, vocational training, and the arts. This year, our school is on a mission to get kids excited about reading and science. With your help, this project can successfully help us achieve both goals!
My Project
Instead of dissecting a frog and reading the same articles as last year, I have decided to shake things up to motivate our kids. This year, I have decided to offer the kids a chance to earn their M.D. (master of dissection) degree through a series of activities. First, we will utilize our new bio bookworms library to read and study about living things. Second, we will select relevant topics relating to the heart and brain that relate to our books such as strokes, heart attacks, concussions, and behavioral conditions that exist in the real world in order to conduct "mini surgical procedures." With a real mammalian heart and lung, students will share their procedures and be able to capture their work using the Epson document camera. Finally, the novel Frankenstein will serve as a basis for our Master of Dissection Ultimate Challenge. This project will allow us to be inspired by literature to not only conduct our own research, but also debate the ever reaching boundaries of science.
Although our kids come from diverse backgrounds, they all have personal stories and connections with brain or heart related trauma or conditions.
This project will allow them to truly explore some of those issues in an in-depth manner while improving their reading comprehension and laboratory skills. By supporting this project, you can help inspire my kids to become inquisitive about the living world around them in a way that truly does matter in the "real world."
