Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My class is composed of 55 fifth graders in a general education class, with students with IEP and ELL learners and special education students such as autism.

A typical day in my classroom looks active.

My students are engaged in learning activities that get them moving, talking to their peers, and asking great questions. You will not see a lot of worksheets in my classroom. My students are learning through hands-on experiences.

I teach in a Title I school.

My fifth-grade students come from very diverse families. I am excited to share that my school is a genuinely diverse community. Not only do students come from varying ethnic backgrounds and places, but the life experiences that they’ve had are incredibly unique. My scholars are creative, thoughtful, and full of excitement!

My students are 9 and 10-year children that love coming to school. When school was closed in the spring of 2020 due to the pandemic not only were the kids wanting to come back but we missed seeing their smiling faces every day.

My Project

Inspired by Ms. Trochez "If We Build Up Girls, Then We All Become STEMinists" Engaging students in activities that combine creative arts and STEM and explore the intersection of art and science in a various STEM careers the love of learning about animals & art, especially using different materials such as clay, wood, and many more can SPARK creativity! So I want to use what they love to build my girls' confidence in doing science, while helping them learn about successful and inspiring women in their STEM fields.

"We need girls who are creative, who are confident, and who are equipped to lead in technology; it's important to explore your creativity at a young age because it is that ability to create that can lead to important innovations that our world needs"-Yamilee Toussant Beach.

My students will learn about Dr. Jane Goodall & Dr. Cynthia Moss, whose research and conservation efforts help endangered animals around the world. The gift cards and different materials, & kits will be used to tap into my students' skills to make projects animals that they will research, create a diorama of its habitats, using found materials at home, and report on their learnings. Next, my students will use the IF/Then Collection to research Ana Maria Porras, Beata Mierzwa & Yamilee Toussant Beach, who have combined their love of arts & fashion with STEM. Once inspired by these women, and the possibility of integrating the arts with STEM, the copper tape, LED lights, batteries, and card stock will be used to learn basic circuitry to make a greeting card that lights up. Finally, my students will then be challenged to create projects with a variety of materials that illustrates a concept in science.
