Help me give my students a book with story that builds empathy, awareness and understanding through someone else's story to better understand their own.
Our amazing Warriors are diving into the wondrous world of Social Emotional Learning and Mindfulness. Many of our students face family and personal crises on a daily basis making school their safe haven. The young minds of our urban K-8 school are learning new ways to manage a wide array of emotions.
Reading is one vehicle to make connections to our real lives and can offer opportunities for students to discuss topics in their personal lives that are difficult and at times frightening.
My Project
Owning a book is a rarity for my students. I have seen their eyes when a book is given to them and they are told it is their's forever! There is hardly anything quite like that moment.
"If This Were a Story" openly and honestly shares relevant social and emotional struggles faced by many of my students and offers many life lessons for young readers to hold in their hearts and minds.
Sharing this book as a class read presents a perfect frame for students to discuss a character's social emotional journey, comparing it to their own and carrying the best of it forward.
