My students need an individual copy of the “The Hate You Give” because it teaches them ownership, deepens their love of reading, helps them to make connections to characters and realize the power of words.

My students are the ones who everyone has counted down and out; based on a zip code.
My scholars are the pieces of coal that in the end will turn into diamonds!
My students are survivors who fight every day to be someone special. My students battle different situations from homelessness to not knowing what they are going to eat or even wear, but my students TRY hard every day. They come to school regardless of what is going on at home and give 110% on every task. They know that life may throw lemons but they are always willing and will try to make lemonade. The school for my scholars is a safe haven. At this school, my scholars feel protected, they know they will receive two meals, love and attention. The school makes sure that all of the students' needs are met. Each day the scholars strive to be better than yesterday. They will show world what success looks like!
Teaching Language Arts for me is a balance between teaching content and teaching skills. The two of course are related: reading comprehension involves the ability not only to need the literature presented but also organize, classify and analyze it. I often model this skill while reading novels, but in this case, the novels are few and far between.
With a class set of novels, we can read the novel together, with a sense of unity, all on the same page at the same time.
My students will be able to have their own copy of the book "The Hate U Give," to hold and be responsible for the book, which in some cases they have never had their "own." They will have the ability to look for answers throughout the text without having to wait on an available novel. It will also inspire a love for reading because in that moment this is your book to read and enjoy!
