Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Middle school students need to read more. Reading practice helps build vocabulary and improve comprehension. Students just don't do enough reading these days and that should come as no surprise with all the digital competition. They spend hours watching videos or playing games.

What if students were introduced to books that they could identify with or people and characters they could relate to?

Perhaps that would engage them and make them want to read. Perhaps they might learn to enjoy reading. This is not just theory, but research (not mine) has shown that when students read about characters like themselves, they spend more time reading.

I would like to provide a variety of new library books for the students. Books with characters who look like them, speak like them, and go through similar challenges. Books that have a cover that will speak to them and make them want to read.

The goal of this book project is to engage my fabulous students in reading a book. I want the students to want to read. The middle school students don't fully understand how important reading is to their education but I do. With the help of generous donors, I will be able to provide the best book options for my students.
