My students are the best and brightest, the struggling and withdrawn, the funny and outgoing, the abused and battered, and everything inbetween. What they all have in common is that when they come to the library, they all want a place to read. Their interests and needs are so diverse, but I always seem to be able to find them something engaging to read.
My students make every day a wonderful day to be a teacher.
I have been a library media specialist for 24 years working with young adults and can't imagine anything else I would have enjoyed doing more. My students come from a rural/fringe town in the heartland of Indiana with approximately 60% of my students living below the poverty level. Despite a lack of resources, my students are creative, inquisitive and resourceful. It was a student who encouraged me to check out DonorsChoose.org to request funding for this project.
My Project
My students need a modern, inviting and comfortable reading area in the library media center. The original drab wood furniture from 1970 has never been replaced. These new comfy and colorful floor seats and couch will allow for a welcoming and inviting area to kick back and read. They are lightweight and can be easily used in many areas of the library.
Libraries become a different kind of learning destination when schools re-imagine them as open, transparent spaces that invite student communication and collaboration, as well as provide a quiet, comfortable area to read.
While you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, we do know that providing an aesthetically pleasing and comfortable environment can impact reading. Please help provide my students an updated reading lounge to settle in with a good book.
