Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Over 80% of our students are considered economically disadvantaged and over 40% are At-Risk, designating our school as Title 1. One harsh reality of working at a Title 1 campus is that children from low-income families are more likely to struggle with engagement in school.

To level the educational playing field for my students, I want to provide opportunities for enrichment by increasing access to real-world, hands-on experiences my students might not otherwise receive outside of the classroom.

Currently, there are 75 Gifted and Talented (GT) students at my middle school. My students and I have created a community and a classroom environment where WE can be open and honest about THEIR academic needs and personal struggles.

My students have different learning needs than their peers. They’re very curious, and their learning is more complex and fast-paced than other students their age. Offering my students a range of learning opportunities will keep them stimulated and lead them to develop talents in a range of areas.

My Project

This trip will make a difference because the students will receive instruction from a highly trained STEM educator. The trip is 100 percent aligned to state teaching standards. The students will discover how force, motion, and physical science play a role in our everyday lives through a ball demonstration where students will guess how different objects fly in the wind tunnel, including a basketball, football, teddy bear and water. The students will understand the nature of fluids and how they exert forces on solid objects, while also using algebraic thinking to understand proportional relationships. They apply math and science by using decimal, scientific notation, and unit conversions to do calculations, graph and interpret results, and understand variability, uncertainty, and error in experimental results.

They will also get to experience a wind tunnel and participate in a flight class where they will learn how to fly and control their bodies in the air.

This once-in-a-lifetime adventure will increase their awareness of exciting STEM careers and learn how STEM is used in the real world.
