My Students

Confucius said, “I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.” A centuries old statement still applies to learning today, especially with elementary students who still are kids and love to play. Let's use that desire to stimulate learning.

My students are in grades third through fifth.

They are students who are facing academic challenges (many in addition to socioeconomic issues). They come to my class for additional mathematical instruction. I don't want to provide them with more of the same type of instruction they have been given in regular math class. I want to provide them with something fun and engaging that they can use to make a mathematical connection. Then they can return from our intervention to math class with confidence and expecting success.

My Project

Removing the world outside of school and looking at my kids as students: They are fun loving! They are entertaining! They are curious! They want to play! They want to learn! They are inspiring! With these geometric magnets, students will be able to have an opportunity for hands on exploration of geometry. Basic shapes are easy to visualize, trace or draw. Three dimensional solids can be built from clay, however the challenge to this typical activity is breaking it down. Students have to be able to visual what shapes were used to build the solid. These magnets will allow students to build solids, however they can also decompose them into their composite shapes.

These magnets will allow students to compose and decompose solid figures in a way that right now we are unable to in my classroom.

This would be the bridge that takes an abstract concept and makes it concrete.
