My Students

My students are eager learners for whom the practical realities of public school don't always help them succeed in class. They want to learn - not just for a good grade, but because they value their own growth as people, but it's hard to do that when you're loaned a beat-up copy of a novel.

I'm delighted to say that my students are prolific note-takers.

They are constantly annotating hand-outs, writing questions in the margins of text excerpts, and highlighting like crazy. We use a highlighting program called Writing With Colors to analyze text and improve our writing, and it has allowed the students to learn and grow at an incredible rate.

My Project

I have requested forty-five copies of the novel, Catcher in the Rye. It would make a huge difference to my students if they could actually annotate and highlight their own copies of the novel, Catcher in the Rye, as we study it together. In college, one of the most valuable practices for me was writing in my books and interacting with texts, which was possible because I owned them. Because my students are only borrowing books from the school, they get in trouble if they so much as bend the cover. I want them to take ownership for their education, symbolically and literally, by owning personal copies of this novel.

With your generous donation, my students will be able to write and highlight to their hearts' content in their own copies of the novel, Catcher in the Rye.

While it may seem sacrilegious to some, I assure you that interacting with a text this way is far from defacing it. My hope is that my students will fully engage with this novel in a way not possible with loaned copies of the book. With your help, we can make a difference for these kids!
