As a teacher in a low-income, high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, they come to school every day ready to take on a new challenge. My students think they need me, but the truth is, I need them. The majority of my students have a disability in Reading. This, in turn, affects them in all subject areas across the board. What makes them truly special is the fact that they are not afraid of failure. Instead, they view failure as a learning tool and pursue on until they succeed.
My Project
The school year has begun, enrollment is up, and our Special Education Department is growing! This year at STEAM our numbers have nearly doubled in the special education department. A larger group of students also means varying learning styles, preferences and needs.
My diverse group of students would benefit from wobble chairs, wobble disc, fidgets, and noise canceling headphones.
The majority of my students have significant difficulty in maintaining attention and staying on task. Maintaining a child’s attention on their school work can be difficult for any teacher. Doing so when that child has autism, ADHD or some other learning disability can be even more challenging. A 2015 study by researchers at the University of California, Davis MIND Institute — an international research center that studies neurodevelopmental disorders — found that fidgeting for children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder may actually help them think. It is also said that chairs that wobble and wiggle help you increase your physical activity. Physical activity increases blood flow, which helps boost oxygen to your brain, and in turn, can help keep your energy levels more consistent throughout the day, contributing to more time on task and cognitive thinking.
Students in special education often struggle with self-regulation; providing our students with tools to help them learn to self-regulate is imperative to their future successes. My class would be elated to see our project funded and would benefit immensely
