Identity & Dreams: Celebrating Diversity

Help me give my students the opportunity to explore identity, culture, and leadership by reading about change makers of color and creating self-portraits. This project celebrates student voice and promotes racial justice through literacy and the arts.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My third-grade students are a vibrant and diverse group of learners from across our great city. Many speak multiple languages and proudly represent Black, Latinx, Arab, Asian, and Eastern European communities. They are curious, creative, and eager to express who they are. This project gives them a way to explore their identities while learning about justice and representation.

In this project, students will read about diverse young leaders from books such as Little Leaders: Bold Women in Black History, Young, Gifted and Black, and We Are the Change.

These stories will inspire opinion writing, poems, and letters.

Next, students will explore their own identities—writing in journals about their names, cultures, traditions, and dreams. With multicultural art supplies like skin-tone crayons, construction paper, and watercolor sets, they’ll create self-portraits and personal writing for a class display we’ll call “The Beautiful Me Project.”

These materials will help students feel seen, celebrated, and connected to both their past and their future.
