Identifying Emotions and Learning to Self-Regulate Through Picture Books

Help me give my students access to books like "Ravi's Roar", "Silly Tilly", and "On Monday When it Rained" to help them learn about different emotions and self-regulation strategies.

My Students

I teach in a magnet school that sits on the outskirts of a city. Our school draws students from many different backgrounds and socioeconomic statuses. We serve children of doctors, lawyers, teachers, computer programmers, restaurant workers, stay-at-home moms, the unemployed, and the homeless. The beautiful thing about our school is our diversity, and everyone's love of showing up to the building every day.

Being able to identify emotions and self-regulate is a critical skill for young children to learn.

All throughout our diverse population, students are still learning to identify their emotions, and self-regulate so that they can be successful in the school community. Even with the strong support and influence of our families and community, it is still our responsibility as a school to help students identify their emotions and learn self-regulation strategies.

My Project

Learning to identify our emotions and self-regulate is one of the most important skills we can learn in life. Schools have a responsibility to teach students how to listen to their bodies to identify their emotions, and teach them appropriate ways to self-regulate.

My project will help provide picture books to introduce students to a wide variety of emotions, teach them that all emotions are okay, and model ways to self-regulate.

Students learning is successful when strong examples are given, and what better way to lay a strong foundation than through the thoughtfully written stories and illustrations of picture books!
