iDance, iPlay, and iFit with an iPod: Fitness in Kindergarten
Help me give my students an iPod, case, and auxiliary cord to promote fitness, play, and dance through the use of music, videos, and health/fitness education apps!
I teach a class of 28 amazing kindergartners who are eager to learn and deserve endless resources, experiences, and opportunities. They come from different backgrounds, have a wealth of experiences, and have a lot to contribute to our diverse learning community. They are eager for knowledge and engaging opportunities to learn.
I have a very diverse population at my school and in my classroom, with at least 50% learning English as their second language, and I teach at the most diverse school in the nation!
The children delight in activities that engage their minds and bodies, and they look forward to what each day of the exciting kindergarten world brings them! It is my job to inspire and motivate them in a variety of ways in which I reach the whole child.
My Project
My students are getting restless and yearning for opportunities to move their busy little bodies! PE is only offered for 1 session per week so it's time to incorporate some movement in my class of wiggly five-year-olds! They couldn't agree more. With limited equipment, we decided we needed 3 things to open up a world of exercise and play: an iPad touch, a protective case, and an auxiliary cord. I will use music from YouTube, Pandora, Kids' songs apps, and our kindergarten favorite songs to get them moving throughout the day. The cord will allow me to connect the iPod to our overhead speaker system. What kindergartener doesn't love to sing, dance, move, wiggle, jiggle, and get fit?
In addition to my own music, there are thousands of fun videos on Youtube and GoNoodle to encourage all kinds of movement including learning songs that help children use their bodies to improve memory and increase fitness!
I will use music and videos to incorporate exercise and movement throughout the school day, which makes students less fidgety and more focused on learning.
Furthermore, the students would be able to use the iPod during our "centers" time and I would be able to project lessons promoting health and fitness on our 10-foot screen by airplaying iPod apps. During centers, students can work with me or in small groups on health and fitness apps to promote healthy living. We will use apps like Just Dance Now, Fitness Kids, Awesome Eats, Iron Kids, GoNoodle Kids, Super Stretch Yoga to get them moving and having fun!
My students' favorite thing at school is playtime. An iPod would help me bring fitness to them through dance and movement, which to them is PLAYTIME!
