This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In the heart of the Bronx, my students are making their footprint in society! I am a first-year Life Skills teacher in a Special Ed High School located in the northern part of THE Boogie Down Bronx. We will be working at the school cafe, taking inventory, creating classic beverages, mouth-watering pastries, just to name a few of our day-to-day tasks.
As a special ed student with moderate to severe disabilities, my students are more likely to get a job in the service industry.
It is my job as their instructor to prepare them with the necessary skills to not only get a job, but to prepare them to be able to succeed in just about any environment. We are a proud brunch who loves hands-on, active, engaging projects and challenges that allow us to think outside the box to find solutions! They come to school each day ready to try new things and take brave chances in order to grow both personally and academically.
We are focusing on our skills, learning some new ones, and having fun along our way.
My Project
Our Cafe work-site menu is expanding and we want to be able to keep up with the requests and demands. We have been gradually adding on to our drink selection and thus far, we offer fresh natural juices, hot coffee, and flavored iced coffee. My students have been proving themselves time and time again since the beginning of the school year.
Currently, we are looking to bring more flavor-filled and colorful options to the table (literally).
With the use of the blenders, we can begin to offer cooler drinks as the weather heats up! Frappes, smoothies, slushies, you name it, we have a plan for it. To top it all off, what is a tasty drink if there isn't a sweet treat to match? My students have been showcasing their baking skills and are practicing the delicate art of the perfect cupcake swirl. With your help, we are paving the way for the young pastry chefs and baristas to take action!
The money earned, goes back into the work-site for more ingredients and small supplies/appliances. The students also take weekly trips to the grocery store where they shop for the needed ingredients for the upcoming week and event(s).
