My students need to have an ice skating field trip! There will be up to 7 students who use wheelchairs, so we need help paying for the bus transportation for our students.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My classroom is at ten different schools serving students in Adapted Physical Education (PE) who have different levels of physical and cognitive disabilities.
We run our class like any other PE class with warm ups, laps, and work on a skill, sport or game. How we do this looks a little different!
I serve over 70 students from first grade to age 22.
The students have different cognitive and physical impairments. I service classes from 1:1 and have classes of up to 20 students at a time. They all have their own personalities and way of accomplishing the tasks given to them.
My Project
This project is for an Ice Skating field trip! There will be up to 7 students who use wheelchairs, so we need help paying for the bus transportation for our students.
We will have up to 7 students in wheelchairs, and a single special needs bus (which are set up to transport our young students who use wheelchairs) can only transport two-four students in wheelchairs - so we need two special needs buses, which can be expensive.
We are hopeful that we can go ice skating because it is an amazing sensory experience where students who use wheelchairs can wheel right onto the ice!
Other students will use a walker for stability or sit on a typical folding metal chair. While others will skate the traditional way - standing up!
Your donation to this field trip will even the playing field!
Ice skating improves my students' health (breathing, circulation, balance, posture and overall coordination and strength).
Ice skating will also provide a chance for important social interaction with their peers. Students will ice skate the traditional way - standing up. Other students will skate on the ice in their wheelchairs, use walkers for support, or will sit in a standard metal folding chair and be glided upon the ice by a teacher or volunteer. Still other students can try out sled hockey.
More than half of students from low‑income households
