Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from various backgrounds. Their socioeconomic status varies. My students are curious learners. Our school is a Title I school with limited resources for our very special population of students. My students have intellectual disabilities but that does not stop them from trying their best and learning as much as they can. They are capable of understanding their surroundings, and they constantly want to explore their world. They enjoy learning and work so hard every single day. They are inspiring. We have been working side by side with typical developing students to build a collaborative learning environment that focuses on functional life skills.
My Project
We have started a weekly coffee and tea cart. Expanding our business is our future goal. The students are working together to grow their business. Financial literacy has become a key component. The students have developed a budget, and a working profit and loss statement every week. Money earned through the donations for our items will be used to keep our school business open, not for profit. We have committed to donating monthly to the food bank and pet shelter as well. The students are creating visual art masterpieces to advertise their business as well.
Students with Intellectual Disabilities and autism need to learn functional life skills.
This project has helped not only students that are differently abled but their typical developing peers. They have been developing specialty tea drinks and recording inventory and the financial aspects. My students have been able to learn all aspects of running a business. The make Art posters to advertise their business. They are learning how to take orders by phone as well as by paper ticket orders, profit and loss tracking, customer service, functional life skills, inventory, sanitation, and how to run promotions. Our biggest expense has been ice. If we have our own ice machine we will cut down on expenses, and the students will also be able to have ice cold water on hot days.
