Ice, Ice Baby!

My students need supplies such as whiteboards, dry erase markers, and pasta canisters to re-create ice cores to study climate change in our environment.

My Students

My students are excited to learn science and love to incorporate project-based learning into our lessons. They love going home and sharing what they are learning, and look forward to connecting their learning with future career goals. I am always looking for new ways to engage my students both in and out of the classroom.

My students become very engaged in learning when we can create project-based learning opportunities.

Our school is in a small, rural school district in southwest Ohio, housed in a building that is almost one hundred years old. Some of my students are learning in the same classrooms that their parents and grandparents did and that makes our school a comfortable place for families to gather.

My Project

Much like trees have a ring each year, glaciers have a new layer each year. When snow falls it brings with it anything that is in the atmosphere when it falls. The layers can contain more than water. They could also contain pollen, insects, dust, volcanic ash, and bubbles of gasses in the atmosphere. Using the requested spaghetti storage containers we will be creating and freezing our ice cores that will include water, gravel, coffee grounds, carbonated water, and insects. The clear organizer containers will hold the ice cores for examination and students will use the whiteboards and dry erase markers for scientific illustrations and ideation.

In this hands-on environmental project, students will be able to create and look at simulated ice core samples and analyze their findings and make inferences about past climates and change that has happened over time.

Students will make career connections by researching information about ice core sampling and core repositories.

Finally, students will create a timeline of the life of their ice core sample making inferences about the past atmospheric conditions and complete detailed scientific illustration of their findings using observation and critical thinking skills.
