They had already fallen in love with building Little Bots earlier this year, but we simply didn't have enough kits to let everyone design their own robot. Thanks to your support, students no longer had to wait for a turn, they could finally jump right into creating, coding, and experimenting independently.\r\n\r\nWith the extra kits, each student team was able to bring their own ideas to life. I watched robots roll across the floor, light up in different colors, and react to obstacles with distance sensors, all designed and coded by students who were proud to say, \"We made this ourselves.\" The added materials allowed them to work at their own pace, troubleshoot in real time, and take true ownership of their engineering process.\r\n\r\nNow, students are documenting their work in their digital portfolios and preparing to share their robots during an upcoming classroom showcase. Your generosity didn't just provide materials; it gave every student the chance to be a creator, a problem-solver, and an engineer. They were amazed that the coding projects they had built on modern laptops could now run on hardware that looked and felt like the early days of video games. This tangible connection to technology's past instantly deepened their excitement and gave them a new sense of pride in their work.\r\nWith these displays, students are not just coding—they are showcasing. They've begun testing their own games on the retro systems, comparing how their graphics and logic play out on screens that mirror the origins of game development. Watching their projects come alive this way has been both inspiring and empowering. It validates their problem-solving skills while also sparking conversations about how technology has evolved and where it might go next.\r\nThis project has had a powerful impact on student learning. It has helped reinforce coding concepts by giving students a physical, visual outcome for their work, while also building confidence as they share their games with peers. Thanks to donors—and especially Ripple—we were able to transform abstract code into something students can touch, see, and celebrate. That leap has made all the difference in turning curiosity into sustained interest in STEM.\r\nLooking ahead, students are already brainstorming how to expand their projects into more complex levels and storylines, eager to see them displayed on the retro systems. They are also planning a small \"retro arcade day\" to invite families and classmates to play the games they've designed. Your support has made this creativity possible, and we're excited for the next steps.","fullyFundedDate":1746525694546,"projectUrl":"project/coding-to-play-retro-style/9236094/","projectTitle":"Coding to Play Retro Style","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Weaver","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp212147_orig.jpg?crop=1749,1749,x54,y12&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1625779607334","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/jill-weaver"},{"teacherId":212147,"projectId":9221164,"letterContent":"When my students first saw the new supplies, their excitement filled the room. They immediately wanted to test recycled fibers, mix natural dyes, and carefully press wildflower seeds into their paper. That moment of discovery set the stage for an Earth Day project that combined chemistry, biology, and environmental awareness in a way that felt creative and fun.\r\nWith these resources, students crafted biodegradable seeded paper and shared it with classmates, families, and local businesses. One highlight was watching them proudly explain to community members how planting the paper could help bees and butterflies. The project gave them ownership of their learning and showed that science can make a visible impact in their own community.\r\nThis project made a real difference in student learning. They connected science concepts like the carbon cycle, deforestation, and pollination to hands-on action, while also building creativity and communication skills. Thanks to the generosity of donors—and especially General Motors—we were able to expand beyond the textbook and give students authentic STEM experiences that inspired them to think and act like innovators.\r\nOur next steps include experimenting with new natural dyes, designing posters, and planning a pollinator awareness campaign. Students are already asking, \"What can we do next?\"—and your support has sparked that excitement. This technology is making a tremendous impact on our students, providing them with hands-on opportunities to explore coding, problem-solving, and teamwork in a fun and engaging way. By programming Sphero to complete tasks, and navigate mazes, our students are developing critical thinking skills while gaining confidence in STEM concepts. Seeing their code come to life in real-time has made learning both exciting and meaningful.\r\nIt has been incredible to watch students who were previously hesitant about STEM subjects embrace this new technology with enthusiasm. One student, who struggled with traditional learning methods, discovered a passion for coding through Sphero, while another, typically quiet in class, has stepped up as a leader in helping peers troubleshoot their programs. These moments remind us how valuable tools like Sphero can be in unlocking students' potential.
