This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As I wrap up my second year of teaching in Richmond, CA, I am looking forward to welcoming a room full of bright, hopeful, and promising fifth-grade scholars in the fall. 100% of our students participate in free or reduced lunch, and 100% of our students come from low-income households.

In creating an environment that promotes critical thinking, creative outlets, and collaboration, I am setting a foundation for cultivating powerful leaders.

My focus for this year is to establish a comprehensive and rigorous choice of books for our classroom library. I hope to open up the world of literacy to the children of our future.

My Project

Having a class set of books allows for students to engage in literary exploration as a classroom community! After the pandemic, students have demonstrated some losses in their reading abilities and their social skills and tools.

In purchasing this class set of Wonder, I plan to start our year fostering healthy relationships among students through whole class reading, inquiry, and creation.

Wonder is a novel that follows a young boy that has undergone several surgeries for a face deformity. He is starting the 5th grade in a mainstream school for the first time.

Focusing on bullying, adjusting to a new school, and finding yourself, Wonder will have the power to bring my students together with compassion, understanding, and appreciation for their individual strengths!
