This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Did you love reading when you were a child. I know I did. I want the same for my students. All children should be introduced to quality literature that they love to read.

I am a fifth grade teacher in New York City.

I work in a low-income high-need school. My students are struggling readers. They have a hard time finding books among my poor classroom library that they are interested in reading. I enjoy reading aloud to my students everyday. I try and share my love for reading with them. A majority of the students in my classroom are two and three years behind grade level in reading. Most of the students are learning English as their second language and some have special learning needs.

My Project

I am asking for a variety of books written by Betsy Byars. She is one of my favorite children's authors. Last week I started reading the book The Pinballs to my students and I saw something spark inside of them. My students started the year groaning when I asked them to read independently; now they are asking me when we are going to read the next chapter of The Pinballs. I am so excited about their new found interest in Betsy Byars and I want to foster this new love in them. We are going to be doing an author study this year and I have decided to choose Betsy Byars as our author.

Please help me foster this new love my students have for Betsy Byars' books.

She is an amazing author and I would love my students to get to know her better. I am hoping that she can be the stepping stone for me to introduce even more great children's authors to my students. Please be the hero that my students need this year.
