My Students

Education is my passion! I have always believed that every student can be successful, and as a teacher I believe my responsibility lies in creating an environment where students can succeed. I set up my classrooms using token systems that focus on reinforcing appropriate student behavior and success. I have found that this approach always leads to a productive and enriched learning environment for all students, including English Learners (EL).

I work as a 2nd grade teacher in a high poverty, urban district.

My students come from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Most of my students speak English as a second language, just like myself. Having experienced what it means to be a bilingual adult in this country, I believe that EL students’ proficiency in language involves much more than basic interpersonal communications.

EL students need support to better develop the cognitive academic language proficiency to perform and succeed in grade-level English and other content classes. Thus, I have found that learning English through literature is an efficient and pleasant way to provide language learners extensive opportunities to use their developing language skills in a meaningful context.

My Project

I am requesting funding for a workshop that will help me to strengthen my ability to teach foundational skills of reading and writing to my students. I want my students to develop better foundational skills that will support their reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language.

This workshop will have a huge impact on the way reading is taught in my classroom.

Phonics instruction is a valuable and essential part of a successful classroom reading program. This workshop will prepare me to teach phonics using the Fundations program. My school district acquired this program last year, but the district did not provide teachers with the proper training due to budget limitations.

English is my second language, so teaching phonics is a real challenge for me. Building a foundation for reading and writing is key for all students. I believe that by attending the Fundations Level 2 Workshop I will learn the instructional principles that will help me to fully implement this program in my classroom. Fundations instruction emphasizes phonemic awareness, phonics-word study, high frequency word study, fluency, vocabulary, handwriting, and spelling. Most of my students read in the lowest 30th percentile; they need all the support and resources in order to become proficient readers. Please help me to grow as an educator, so I can help my students to become successful readers.
