My students need a variety of breakfast bars, oatmeal, and other snacks to stave off hunger, especially at the end of the school day.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students want what we all do--a safe home, good friends, good health, opportunities to learn and grow, and the chance to make a difference in the world. They come to me from over twenty countries, speaking a dozen languages. New to the country, the culture, and rigors of high school, my students deal with a lot. On top of these challenges, I have several students who come to school hungry, arriving from a shelter, or worse, on the streets.
We can all see signs of homelessness manifest in distracted learning and irritability, but sometimes students don't show any outward signs at all.
The only reason we know about these cases is because our school has been informed about their homeless status by city social services, or the students themselves are brave enough to share their stories. No child should be without a stable home. One small sense of stability I can offer is something to eat when they are hungry.
My Project
In the morning, thanks to the wisdom of our city government, all students can arrive a few minutes before the start of school to receive free breakfast. Later in the day though is a very different story. We all could use a snack mid-morning or at 4:00. Many students stay after school for clubs and homework help activities but there is no central plan for feeding them outside of breakfast and lunch time. For my homeless students, after-school poses an especially cruel choice - stay in this oasis, maybe their one stable place, to deepen connections with classmates and teachers, or leave and get food at the convenience store on the way back to their shelter, temporary apartment, or worse situation.
Having snacks for them is a huge incentive for them to stay.
Without snacks, they have told me they would rather spend what little spending money they do have on empty calories at the corner store. By having a variety of healthier snacks - nuts, granola bars, oatmeal, Sun chips - at the ready, I can make sure these students see school as a place that can meet their needs during the day, as well as after the last bell rings.
Please send us food to make our school a place students see as meeting their needs when they are hungry.
