My Students

Do you remember being a child who loved to read? When I was young there was nothing better then going to the library or bookstore and getting the newest Judy Blume book. I want my students to feel this same excitement about reading.

I am a fifth grade teacher in New York City.

I work in a low income, high need school. For a majority of my students, they are learning English for the first time and there are several special needs students in my classroom. Unfortunately for my students, they joined me this school year with 80% of them reading at a second and third grade level. The real problem is that although their reading comprehension is two to three years behind, their interest in story content is still at a 5th grade level. I want to get them interested in reading again and for some of them, the first time.

My Project

I am in need of a set of Eve Bunting books. If you have never read her books, she is amazing. She has taken mature concepts like the Los Angeles riots, the Vietnam Memorial, and being homeless, just to name a few, and created stories on children's levels. So it fosters both needs with my students. It gives them literature that is easy enough for them to comprehend, but keeps the content at a mature enough level for their age. My students will be going to middle school in less than a year. I am trying to beat the clock and raise their reading level to grade level to prepare them for middle school. With your help, I know I can make this happen. Without books that will help me to raise their comprehension and keep them interested at the same time, it will be very difficult for me to get them to grade level. It is crucial that these students leave the 5th grade on level.

Unfortunately, the older students get, the more they struggle with reading if it is not corrected in elementary school.

Then, they are more likely to drop out of school due to academic frustrations. I need your help in making it possible for my students to reach grade level in reading. My students work very hard and they have the potential to make it and be professionals in the future. Please help me give them the gift of reading.
