My students need 30 copies of An Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie so we can read something light, entertaining, and literary in our reading intervention class.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from homes that struggle with poverty on a variety of different levels. Some of my students deal with extreme poverty, while others are scraping to get by with the bare essentials. Our school is acutely aware of the challenges our students face when they leave us each day, so we offer a lot of programs (food service, as well as social and emotional) to ensure we're helping them in every way possible. But when they go home at night, so much is out of our control. They're babysitting siblings while parents are at work, cooking and cleaning apartments that house multiple families, some of them are working themselves into the wee hours of the night - there is little time for homework and academic enrichment. They need so many things, and go without so much because of their families socio - economic status. This has an adverse impact on their educational performance at school, which in turn impacts their ability to break this cycle and make a better life for themselves.
My Project
I want to read The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian with my reading intervention class. They struggle to read, and they lack the desire to pick up a book. I keep telling them that its because no one has ever made them read GOOD books before. And this book is so good. I know my students will love this book, and I hope Sherman Alexie can help me inspire my students to want to read more. My students will relate to the main character in this novel a lot, and I hope their ability to identify with him will make them want to read more. There is no more money in our budget to purchase new books! Please help me inspire my students to read more.
