My class encompasses most of the students in our school. I see students from 2nd through the 8th grade. We do great inquiry work in my class. Science incorporates mathematics, technology and engineering. We are a STEM Lab.
My students are curious.
They want to know why. They want to have hands-on work. It is extremely important to me that my students understand the relationship between mathematics and science. My students are amazing people. We are a 98% African American and 97% free and reduced lunch population. I am constantly impressed by their ability to overcome obstacles. I want them to have the skills of mathematics to help them with science and also to help them work through the various economic problems that they face in their lives.
I have not had a membership in the National Council Teachers of Mathematics organization since I was a student teacher because of the cost of joining professional associations. Mathematics is the language of science. I need to be able to help my students engage in authentic mathematical reasoning as they conduct scientific experimentation. This association will help me do that.
My students need a teacher that is prepared to teach the 21st century skills that they need to become college and career ready.
My students do not have all the advantages that students from more affluent areas have, so I need to help bridge the gap. Belonging to professional associations gives me access to experts that can help me deliver the best possible instruction to my students.
