My Students

My 8th grade students are enrolled in an Algebra 1 Regents class. These students come from a multicultural background, are worldly, inspiring, hardworking, and a great deal of fun. They inspire me everyday to do my best and I hope they feel the same. These students have gone from 7th grade Math straight into 9th grade Algebra. They will walk into their high schools next year with many credits already complete. This is the second year that we have pushed all students towards Algebra 1. I feel it has been a great success with over a 90% pass rate.

My Project

What's better than learning how to play a new instrument? The light in a students' eyes shines brightly when a they finally learn how to play their first chord. Their body language changes and they instantly become addicted. They want to learn the next chord, and build on their knowledge. If these students can learn how to play guitar, then they can learn how to do anything. Learning a new instrument teaches patience, perseverance, increases self-esteem, and allows a student to play their favorite songs.

I have been hosting a Guitar Club after school this year.

I have 20 students, but only 9 guitars. All too often these students have to share guitars with one another. I would be overjoyed if each student could have their own guitar that they could play during these "jam sessions."
