I am an Autistic Support Special Education Teacher of a public school in Philadelphia, and my students are some of the greatest teenagers that I know. My students require a functional curriculum focused on academics, communication, community, domestic, and vocational skills. This means that my job is to help prepare my students for life outside and after middle school and high school. We work on these needed skills through various ways including but not limited to cooking/baking, doing community-based instruction trips, working closely with other classes, and building skills through hands on materials. Even though my students experience economic struggles and academic barriers, they come to school every day and work their hardest in our room!
Our school is a school that provides 100% free breakfast and lunch just to give you an idea of the poverty level they come from.
Please help me to provide some of the things to assist in building our 21st Century learning skills! With your help I can help my students to thrive within my classroom.
My Project
As the world around us advances in technology, teachers need to be able to change the way they are teaching their students to help them to grow in the 21st Century. This means not only are my students working on being able to read printed language they are working on being able to read digital language, they are also working on being able to write in digital language. In order to do this they need a mix of various technology pieces available at their finger tips.
My students thrive on preparing for the 21st Century workplace, and I would love to be able to provide them more opportunities to grow in these fields.
In order to do this I am asking for your help! I would love to gain access to two iPads and a few new pieces for our Osmo games. We currently are using Osmo with iPods, however since the iPods are older and smaller it is harder for a few of my students with visual impairments to feel successful using these materials. With two iPads, I would be able to provide all of my students the chance to build their 21st century skills easier.
Aside from using the iPad's to utilize the Osmo games, we would also use them to gain access to more applications such as Epic Books where my students can listen to and read hundreds of books on their individual levels. We would also gain access to other applications that would allow us to build on our mathematical and reading skills. Overall these iPads would open up a world of possibilities for my students.
