My students are amazing tiny humans. They are smart, inquisitive, funny, and kind. They all have the autism diagnoses which adds to the fun but also adds to the challenges in our classroom. My students struggle with patience and have low frustration levels. Technology can be a trigger for them when it is too complex or isn't working properly. Frustration can lead to negative behaviors and shutting down and that leads to less instructional time. My students require small group, short lessons, and frequent breaks to be successful. It is a challenge to get all of our work done every day, so interruptions for whatever reason hinder that goal.
My Project
These iPads will be so beneficial for my students with ASD. My students struggle with fine motor skills, so a touch pad or a mouse proves too challenging. The touch screens on these tablets are familiar and easy for my students to use. We see less frustration, more focus, and enjoyment when my students use technology that addresses their specific needs.
Independence is always the end goal for my students.
Improving their lives, helping them prepare for their future, giving them the skills to be independent are real world solutions to real world problems for my students and this technology will help them to achieve their goals. My students can login to the iPads and do research independently. They will be able to safely use the iPads anywhere in our room or school. They will be able to get all their daily interventions done at the same time so there will be more time for whole group instruction. These iPads will be the perfect addition to our classroom.
