Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
If you can't beat them...join them! It is imperative as an educator to bring my students opportunities that will prepare them for success in the future. I can't slow down! I must keep the learning meaningful, current, and life applicable in order to meet the needs of my diverse group of 5th graders.
My 5th grade classroom consists of 32 students.
The students in my class find it difficult to find hope and confidence in their everyday life of struggle. My school is a brand and just opened this 2010 school year. It is located in the heart of community in a busy city in Southern California. The student population is a wonderful melting pot of cultures and ethnicities. A majority of our students are of Latin descent and come from homes where Spanish is the primary language spoken. A large portion of the students suffer from the effects of poverty, domestic violence, child abuse, neglect, lack of health care, hunger, homelessness, and substance abuse. Students lack in good character,respect for authority,and suffer from poor self-esteem. I strive to help them develop a love for learning and a strong work ethic. We are one step closer to success. The school has a mission and vision to focus on the curricular areas of math, science, and technology. A digital iPod Touch will support this.
My Project
Technology can make or break you today! Technology provides essential tools for all professions and businesses to have and work with. Students have technology state standards they are to become proficient in. They need to have the opportunities to learn and grow within the instructional setting where they can explore while staying safe and viewing appropriate grade level content. The students will be able to become familiar with the use of touch screens and how to navigate them. Students will be able to have it to use when at the library, computer lab, classroom, and outside. They will be able to do research easily when necessary by accessing the web. They can use it individually to practice skills, take tests, do projects, take notes, keep records, etc. They can also use it collaboratively for group projects. They will become knowledgeable in the world of applications. They will be able to access music as well to support their English language learning skills.
The impact this IPOD TOUCH and headphones will have on this years' students and the students in my classroom for years to come is immeasurable.
There will be endless opportunities for creating, thinking, applying, practicing, recording, and investigating. My students come from homes where technology is a luxury. The reality is that technology is a necessity, as well as having skills to use them. The school must provide these opportunities for their students to keep them working for success.
