My Project
My fourth grade students have always enjoyed novel studies as well as history. I would like to combine their interest of both into a novel study about the Titanic. This novel study would have everyone read the book, I Survived the Sinking of the Titanic, as well as the other reference books that are included in this project. I want my students to feel as if they are on the ship and get a feel for what it was like on the massive and elegant ship before the unthinkable happened. I have also included replicas of Titanic artifacts in this project because I want my students to write newspaper articles, picture captions, and interviews as if they were really on the ship.
I think this novel study will really bring this historic event to life for my students.
Many of my students have expressed interest in the Titanic but are unable to imagine what this experience was like. The book that we will use in the novel study tells the story of the sinking of the Titanic from the viewpoint of a child who survived the event. I think this will help my students make a connection while reading and writing.
