My school is comprised of 690 students. Of those students, 63% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. We have just recently attained Title I status due to this. I have seen that my students are faced with many challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite these challenges they face, they still want to learn and succeed. My students deserve every opportunity to do so. I have also noticed that many of my students do not have access to books at home. Which leads to lower reading interests and scores. I strive to make them love to read, what better goal is there?
How can we close the achievement gap when students do not have the basic school supplies they need to succeed?
Students that do not have their supplies are proven to be left behind as well as feel like they are not good enough. No child should have to feel inferior to another due to circumstances that are out of their control.
My Project
I am requesting new novels for my classroom library. I asked my students what books they would like to see or have more of and these titles were mentioned again & again. The I Survived series was highly requested and my kids love to read them. They are constantly checking them out of our school library. I have also requested The City of Ember series, A Wrinkle in Time series, Epic Zero series, and the Maze Runner series. All of these books are considered high interest reads, as well as on their reading level.
"Today a reader, tomorrow a leader", if that is true, why shouldn't my students have new books to become a better reader.
