My Students

Our school principal asks students at the end of each closed-circuit television broadcast "Who’s gonna [sic] be PONO today?" and my students always answer "I will be PONO today!" PONO is an integral part of our character education program and essentially means "doing what is right."

Almost 3/4 of the student population qualify for free or reduced lunch.

This means that money is not something that comes easy to families in our community. Therefore, I am always looking for ways to reduce the amount students and families provide out of pocket for school materials and activities. It's the PONO thing to do!

My Project

The materials I am requesting, as random as they may seem, are needed for STREAM (Science, Technology, wRiting, Engineering, Arts, and Math) lessons via Mystery Science. My second grade team has embraced this online resource and the students are loving the NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards) aligned lessons. Preparing for the activities requires materials that cannot be purchased with school funding.

Hands-on activities make learning more meaningful and memorable.

Mystery Science has given students an opportunity to engage in more hands-on learning. For example, students will be using the nylon stockings and turf builder to create a Grass Head and explore the importance of sunlight. They will also dive into the importance of water by creating a root viewer with the CD cases and radish seeds.

Integrating subjects has been a goal for our grade level this year. STREAM is one example of how we are working towards that goal. This has helped students stay engaged with their learning and they are excited when they see STREAM on the schedule.
