Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have an amazing group of students! Our class has students from 2nd-6th grade who all have unique abilities. All of my students have various levels of physical and health impairments, and many have complex communication needs. Their unique needs are supported in creative ways to help them learn, communicate, socialize, play, and grow as an individual. You will not find a more loving, confident, and fun group of kids! They are incredible! Each child brings their own personality, strengths, challenges, and voice to our learning community. Their voice is what matters most. My hope is that with each project, I can help them be heard.
My Project
Our school library needs updated books that help us teach ability awareness, inclusion, diversity, and acceptance. All of our students bring their own unique experiences and stories to our school community. Our school has a large number of students with diverse disabilities. We have students with physical impairments, learning disabilities, autism, those who are medically fragile, and many more.
A huge part of our school culture needs to focus on educating staff and students on ability awareness and inclusion.
Our school already does wonderful things to support this, but we are always looking to do better! Students being able to see themselves or a friend represented in a story can be powerful! Stories of diversity, overcoming challenges, and acceptance are so important in the education of our students.
