My Students

The children are predominately African American youth aged three to four years old. Most of the children come to school well groomed, healthy, and with their basic needs of life met. As their teacher, I see energetic students that are happy to be in the classroom and eager to learn and explore. They are curious learners that find creative ways to purpose the few resources that are in the learning environment. They take pride in their accomplishments and they are thirsty to learn and discover the world around them. John Fiske Elementary School is a small Chicago Public School that is located in an economically depressed area on the South side of Chicago. The students are at-risk due to a myriad of economic and social impacts. The school is a level two-plus, Tiered school that works hard to provide the students with the resources that are needed to all of students that attend. Unfortunately, the school is hampered by the environmental impacts of safety.

My Project

The materials requested are an instructional aid, which will provide an expedient way for the teacher to track and monitor the progress of each student. The day is divided between large and small group activities to help each student learn how they best learn in their personal learning style. The requested materials such as a document camera, an LCD projector, a tracing projector and an Acer laptop, will assist the students to read and solve mathematic and scientific problems with confidence. These instructional materials will expose the students to early literacy, phonologic awareness, and writing skills. These materials will provide core skills such as sharing and collaborating cooperative learning that are designed to foster cognitive development.

As Marie Montessori, so aptly stated,“a child’s play is their most serious business.” This aptly describes the power of interactive materials that encourage learning, but also provide a greater enactment of how what you learn is integrated into your environment.
