Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are energetic fifth graders who are eager to learn! They love active engaging projects that allow them to move around and interact with each other. We are a high needs, low income school in Southern California. Although my students may face many challenges, they come to school each day ready to learn and challenge themselves to be the best they can be while encouraging each other in the process.
As my students grow, they learn more about themselves as people and as students and are learning to advocate for themselves on what they need to reach their maximum potential.
My Project
The classroom library is the heart of our classroom. Every book helps students learn a new skill, go to a far away place, or find a new role model or hero. Students gather near the library to discuss books and recommend new ones to each other.
The stories on the pages can change a student's life.
These books will be used as read-alouds and added to our classroom library. During read-alouds, we are able to enjoy the book as a whole class and hold a discussion about the themes, characters, events and our emotions connected to the story. By adding these new books to our library, we would enhance the reading experience of every student. As the students search through the different bins looking for a book to read they will be able to find books that represent who they are and the background they come from making an instant connection to the book and building the want to read.
My students have a passion for reading and searching out knowledge and being able to make a connection to more books in our classroom library will only continue to ignite that passion and expand their reading horizons.
