Help me give my students books that have characters who look like them!
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Stadler's classroom raised $293
This project is fully funded
My Students
My students are a group of highly energetic, amazing children with autism in grades 1-5. Many students with autism have difficulties in learning new information, communicating and social interaction. These difficulties are often compounded by sensory overload that they experience daily.
My students are energetic, enthusiastic learners.
The students I teach range from mild to severe on the autism spectrum. Finding activities that can encompass all my little learners can be difficult! I teach in an urban elementary school in Wisconsin with a high poverty rate. All of my kids have excellent attendance and have a love of learning!
My Project
These books will continue to enhance our extensive classroom library. My classroom library is a place that my students really enjoy; they are able to get comfy in a beanbag chair and read! All of these books have been chosen with my diverse students in mind.
With these new books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of books that will allow them to read books with characters who look like them.
Studies have shown that kids enjoy reading titles with characters who look like them. When they see themselves, kids are able to make better connections to the book which allows for deeper comprehension of the text because kids are making self connections. Books with diversity are also important because they teach kids about others. They help promote respect and empathy for all types of people.
