My Students

My students are excited to come to school each day and to learn from one another. They enjoy working in collaborative groups and sharing their knowledge with each other. They enjoy using their critical thinking skills to evaluate new information while integrating the arts to show their learning. They get very excited any time we can use technology in the classroom, and they aren't afraid to try something new.

Jane Goodall once said, "You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you.

What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make." With this quote in mind, I want to help my students become aware of the impact they are having on the world around them.

My Project

Games bring everyone together by giving us the opportunity to play with each other, to laugh with each other, and to learn with each other. At our school, we have students from all over the world. I am hoping to build both a strong mathematical foundation and a strong sense of community through play. All around the world, children love to stack cups, and the speed stacking cups I'm requesting will cross all cultural barriers. Students will be comfortable with this activity, no matter where they were living before arriving at our school. This activity will give students a chance to practice their math skills by counting how long it takes each team to create a stack, how tall the stack is, and how long it takes them to restack their towers. We have many Chinese students at our school, and hacky sacks can be traced back to Chinese culture. Incorporating hacky sacks into our PE times, these students will feel connected to their culture and will be proud to share it with our classmates. My students will practice their math skills by seeing how many times they can bump the ball in a row and also by timing how long they are able to bump the ball. Students can then collect the numbers and practice graphing skills by charting the data. Frisbee is played in more than 90 countries around the world. To help students of all cultures feel connected, I am asking for a class set of spin jammers. Students will practice their math skills by measuring the distance they can throw the spin jammer and then comparing it to their peers.

This project is a perfect way for play, culture, and math to bring students together and allow them to see themselves in our classroom.
