Help me give my students books that they can see themselves in. Our classroom library needs books that have characters that represent the kids in the room. We need characters with autism, melanin, and diverse backgrounds!

My Students
Second grade is such a wonderful year of learning. We have so many different types of learners with many different needs. I have the privilege of teaching students with Autism, Gifted & Talented, students with ADHD, students who receive Speech & Language Services, and students who are considered typically developing. We have a diverse set of needs that need to be met every day.
My students have unique traits and backgrounds and when we come together they make our classroom feel like a family.
I am so excited for the learning that my students will show this year. They will learn to take time to do quality work and let their effort shine. These kids come from families who support and nurture their creative drive and give them the tools they need to be successful later in their education and life.
My Project
Students of color or with disabilities are grossly under-represented in Children's Literature. As of June 2018, 50% of children's book characters are White, followed by Animal Characters at 27%. Books with characters that are African, African/American, Asian Pacific Islander, Latinx, or First Nations make up a COMBINED total 23% of children's books.
The students in my classroom need to be able to see themselves in the books that they are reading.
That includes students with dark skin, light skin, students with autism, students who are heavy, students in wheelchairs-- every child should be able to find a book character to identify with that is strong and shows them the amazing things they can grow up to be. I selected these books to help make our library a mirror or a window for my second grade readers. Books that act as Mirrors are stories where kids can see themselves as that character. Books that act as Windows allow students who do not look like the character to see the experience and life of the people who are represented in the story. Both are critical to an uplifting classroom community and celebrating diversity and our own unique traits.
