My Project
The gift of literacy is a gift that sparks an endless cycle of giving. It takes a village to raise a child, and our school hopes to take the initiative to take an active role in helping the families in our school and families all over our community to become readers.
In 2016, out of 3,200 children's books published in the United States, only 7% featured Asian children - yet there are 17 million Asian Americans in this country.
Representation matters in movies, television, and for our kids, the books they read. As an educator, I recognize literature's profound influence on young minds. Reading expands their knowledge, sparks their imagination, and plays a pivotal role in shaping their sense of self and the world around them. Students must see themselves and their diverse backgrounds represented in the books they read, fostering a deep understanding of belonging, self-esteem, and cultural appreciation.
Our classroom is home to an incredibly diverse group of students, each with unique stories, backgrounds, and perspectives. We want to ensure that our book collection reflects this rich tapestry of identities, offering narratives that authentically portray their lived experiences. By embracing diversity in literature, we aim to promote empathy, understanding, and inclusivity among our students.
