I See Me and I See You: Exploring Diverse Experiences
Help me give my students a class set of the novel The Distance Between Us, so that our diverse students have both mirrors and windows in the curriculum.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students and their families are really special. We have a large school, with an ethnically and socioeconomically diverse population, and we work hard to create opportunities for our community to get together to share their unique experiences and engage in and celebrate learning.
With a majority of the families in our school living in poverty, we try to create innovative learning experiences that build our students' repertoire.
We want to offer students at our Title I public school the same sorts of experience that students in rich public schools receive. We are focused on social justice and educational equity.
My Project
This project allows students an opportunity to learn about the realities faced by some people who immigrate to the United States. The class set of the novel, The Distance Between Us, will be a springboard for discussing immigration and immigrant experiences. The novel tells of a family’s journey to the United States. A majority of the students in my classes are Latinx, and some have parents who immigrated from Mexico, while others have come to the US from Syria, Guatemala, and a variety of other countries.
Reading about immigration allows some of our new arrivals and first generation students to see themselves in the curriculum as they reflect on the ways in which their personal histories are similar to and different from those of the main character.
In addition to offering opportunities to learn about immigration in the United States, students will have opportunities to develop empathy as they listen to each other’s stories and family histories. Thank you in advance for considering a donation to this project!
