My Students

Students walk into my classroom every day ready to learn and grow. My students are open-minded, creative, and full of life! They are excited by learning, especially when they can see themselves represented in books, curriculum materials, and content that we study.

Our community is just as special as the amazing children!

Families of a diverse background work together and find ways to support students and teachers in any way they can. Anytime a family is in need, the school community is right there waiting to help in any way they can. Working at such an inspiring and loving place only makes me want to work harder for each child that walks through the door every morning.

My Project

I never realized that teaching in a diverse community would be the biggest blessing of my career. Throughout my eight years as a 4th-grade teacher, I have taught so many special and unique students. Students who have taught me to look at the world in new and different ways. They have taught me about their holidays, religious ceremonies, cultural traditions, words and phrases in languages I didn't know anything about, and their own histories and stories they bring with them to school every day. I owe these students so much.

When I look at my classroom library, however, I realize that I need to make sure each one of those students can pick up a book and read a story or learn about someone that they can see themselves in.

Whether they want to read about historical figures, girls dealing with hard friendships, or superheroes, my students deserve to find connections to themselves. More than that, I want all students to see that race, religion, gender, or orientation should not dictate anyone's success.

I am so excited to get this project funded so that I can update my classroom library for the 2019 school year. I want to fill the bookshelves with new books that will grab students' attention and then keep them engaged with fun, powerful, and, most importantly, diverse stories. Students will be able to read these books during our ELA workshop and also use nonfiction books as a resource for history projects. Please consider donating to this project dear to my heart.
