Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The public elementary school where I teach is located in a suburban neighborhood. There are 26 third-grade students who come from different cultural backgrounds. Some live in single-family homes, others in condominiums, and others in apartment buildings. Students will be on-campus and still adjusting to the social learning involved in whole group and small group instruction.

Despite the range in backgrounds and experiences, the common thread is that all of my students would benefit from a classroom where concepts connect with visual representations, collaboration enhances learning, and community building is partly an engagement strategy and partly an SEL strategy.

My plan is to create a community-oriented classroom with multiple routine opportunities for flexible student groups to collaborate on vertical learning activities. Students would benefit from this student-centered approach because collaborative learning has a positive correlation with higher academic achievement and has a positive effect on relationship building in the classroom.

My Project

The whiteboard will be used to support conceptual understanding through visual representation. There's a saying about how we are more likely to remember what we see and to understand when we actively participate in our learning.

Because the whiteboard is portable, it will easily transition from a teacher tool to a vertical learning collaborative student tool.

Students will also have access to the chart paper as a portable small group resource to continue the collaboration at the desk level.

There's a place for competition in learning and there's also a positive effect on learning collaboration and sharing ideas.
