My Students

I teach Second Grade ELA at a public elementary school in Southeast, DC. My school is centered in a community that struggles with high poverty, unemployment, homelessness, and crime rates. I have been teaching at this school for the past four years and keep coming back each year because of the spark I see each year in the eyes of my students. They are constantly growing, seeking more information about themselves, their community, and the world, They have big dreams of who they WILL become and are ready to work ten times harder to achieve those dreams.

"We need technology in every classroom and in every students hand, because it is the pan and paper or our time, and it is the lens through which we experience much of the world."-David Warlick

They want to be long-term difference makers. My goal is to do everything in my power to level the playing field for my students. "You cannot change the cards you've been dealt, just how you play the hand."

My Project

In order to level the playing field, my students need access to quality technology tools and need the ability to log on daily. Unfortunately, the technology at our school is stretched thin; most of the laptops and desktops do not work and the ones that do are used primarily for testing across all the grades.

We are requesting three iPads that students can use during centers and for assisted learning.

These iPads would ensure my students receive daily access to technology programs like Dreambox and Lexia.

During small groups, technology will be a center where students can utilize these iPads and access amazing blended learning programs that our school has already purchased but does not have enough available tech for students to actually implement.

Additionally, I have quite a few students with special needs. I can use the iPads to give them assignments that can be read to them or give them the extra support that they need.
