This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students in Washington, DC, are a community of eager and inquisitive third graders! Almost all of my students are English language learners, bringing diverse languages and cultures into the classroom.

My students were in first grade when Covid-19 first hit and we went virtual, and being back in person isn't always easy - but they are ready and excited to learn every day.

This year is a particularly weird one, as teachers and students are both adjusting to the "new normal." We need some supplies we've never needed before, or our supplies dwindled during the slow return to in-person learning. Your help means more now than ever, and it's always meant so much to me and my students.

My Project

It's a whole-class discussion. One student gives her answer, and now I want to see whether the rest of the class agrees or disagrees - and I want to see that they're paying attention. Verbal engagement is tough because you can't hear everybody, and hand signals are useful but I can see sometimes students will change their answer when they see other answers.

With these hand-held whiteboards, I can quickly check my students' understanding.

Markers are down, so they're not changing their answers, and I can quickly see the answers instead of a cacophony of voices. With this simple tool, I know students are paying attention because they know they'll have to show an answer, and I am able to do a check on everyone so no student is left out!
