My Students

My third grade students are special because of the diverse academic abilities and compassionate heart of each student in my class. They learn best from hands on lessons that allow them to have a book in their hands. The students can hear the pages turning as they follow the words on the page with their eyes while hearing the words come to life. When COVID-19 abruptly ended in person learning the spring of 2020, my students were deprived of having books to read at home. Many do not have libraries of books in their homes and they were forced to stop reading due to this. This has negatively impacted my students reading ability. In addition to this, the local libraries were closed. My students are eager to get books in their hands to develop reading skills that will reinforce this love for reading so that the students will have a desire to never stop learning.

My Project

The pandemic caused a barrier for my students to access books. I want to put books back into my students' hands. The five timeless novels will allow my third graders to engage in reading stories that they can make a text to self connection. These stories are about children close to their ages and have experiences that many students encounter. The novels include humor, adventure, suspense, loss, and family interactions.

My third graders have an eagerness to read books and having these books will positively impact their reading comprehension.

My students will each have a book to read in groups at school and take home to read. We will have discussions about the characters, setting, problems faced and ways the characters solve their problems. Students will be able to use their artistic talents when drawing and painting pictures to show how they visualize what they have read. Projects such as book reports, power points, and crafts will be used to allow students to display their comprehension of each novel.
