Bringing more modern literature into the classroom will not only educate students, but also generate excitement about reading. Providing sets of newer books to classroom teachers gives them them the tools to provide students with an exciting and new educational experience studying literature that they can relate to on a more personal level. I will purchase a set of 30 novels, titled Wonder by R.J. Palacio for use in the sixth grade English Language Arts classrooms. Students will read, listen to, study, discuss, and write about the novel. This novel will enhance the curriculum by providing a newer novel with more relatable characters. The students will study themes, characterization, plot, conflict, genres, vocabulary, figurative language, point of view, author's purpose, as well as other aspects of literary analysis. Activities will include discussion, writing, and a culminating hands on project created and presented by the students.
