My Students

There are cheers in the room when the chapter book comes out after lunch. This year, I will use these chapter books to teach reading. I need teacher guides and page dividers/protectors for student work. Also, the print making tools, iPad, and printer ink will help create gorgeous final projects.

I am a second grade teacher in a Title I school and that means that my students come from low socioeconomic households.

65% of my students are English Language Learners. Despite these challenges, my students come to school each day eager to learn and take charge of their education. I believe in empowering my students and giving them thrilling and motivating educational experiences that simultaneously improve their math, writing, reading, science and social studies skills.

My Project

This year, I want the class to share the joy of chapter books together. Using the teacher guides, I can lead effective class discussions about each chapter. The whiteboard markers (along with our whiteboards) will let them quickly show me their thinking. The kids will complete comprehension activities as we read, and page dividers and page protectors are tools that will help them keep a "Comprehension Binder" that holds work from each book we read together. 2nd graders are just learning how to make pictures in their mind when they read chapter books. The art ink rollers and ink are a great way to create a print of a scene from the book. We will make our own pictures for chapter books! The color printer ink will allow us to create art projects, reports, and vocabulary pictures. The iPad is helpful for students working on accuracy and fluency, and a tool to make amazing reports. Sight word, spelling, movie, and puppet apps will give every level of reader a tool to improve.

I see the power of reading authentic, engaging chapter books with my second graders.

They cheer when it is time for a read aloud after lunch. This year, I want our read aloud time to be rich with instruction and interaction with our chapter books. With these supplies, our class will spend loads more time thinking about, connecting with, and creating projects with the books they cherish instead of spending a mere week with a basal reading program.
