My Project
Our kindergarten students are young, curious, and striving for autonomy! They love learning through books, but there is nothing more *magical* than hearing a child read independently for the 1st time! However, the path to literacy starts with many mini steps (building oral language skills + vocabulary, developing phonological + phonemic awareness, making predictions, understanding print has meaning + how it's organized: holding a book, identifying its parts, turning pages, tracking words, matching voice to print … to name a few).
Kids are motivated to learn reading skills when they have high-interest books, that are leveled just right for their abilities.
Funds for this project will benefit Mrs. Daley's and Thomas's classrooms. Donations go towards "Me Reader" sets (electronic readers), featuring some of our students' favorite nature topics and characters from Disney, Sesame Street, and Nickelodeon. Each set contains 8 illustrated books, packed with a sleek tablet that reads each book aloud while the students press the matching book and page buttons, turn the pages, and follow the text. What a wonderful *skill AND confidence builder!*
For students who are ready to make the leap from read-alouds to independent reading, donations for this project will also fund a complete set of "BOB Books." These decodable books gradually build pre-reading, beginning reading, and advanced reading skills by having students apply phonetic principles, recognize sight words and demonstrate comprehension. Children will also enjoy the whimsical illustrations and cute stories, almost as much as saying, "I CAN READ!"
