My Students
Our school is an all girls 6-12 school nestled in the heart of Atlanta. It is a Title I School where 99% of the student population receive free or reduced-price lunch. Our young ladies are resilient, they are the roses that grew from the concrete. They are inquisitive, full of energy, and optimistic about the possibilities outside of their immediate and sometimes harsh reality.
Despite the barriers they may encounter, these girls walk into our front doors where there is a full staff waiting to nurture their potential.
We may not be able to control their home lives, however, we can certainly control their experience while at school.
My Project
I will use the materials to start a small classroom library and provide access for all my students to a wide range of reading materials that reflect abilities and interests. I focused on selecting easy French short stories written especially for learners of the French language, with high frequency vocabulary and comprehension questions, because I want the reading experience to be a positive and successful one for my students, but also a constructive one from the academic point of view.
A classroom library motivates students by encouraging voluntary and recreational reading which is essential to language acquisition and acquiring proficiency.
It also gives the teacher flexibility to vary the reading activities and moments to help young people develop an extensive array of literacy strategies and skills.
My upper levels and my AP class will benefit immensely from the paper dictionaries. It will teach them how to use a dictionary rather than a translation program, and will give them a chance to learn other words while looking for a particular word.
