Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I provide instruction to an amazing group of students with mild to moderate learning disabilities, ranging from second to fifth grade. My students are working below grade level standards in reading and writing by one to two grade levels. To address the literacy gaps, I provide intensive reading instruction to my students through the use of research based reading programs, formal and informal assessments, and progress monitor students on a weekly basis.
My students come to my classroom to work on foundational reading skills which include beginning alphabetical principles, blending sounds, decoding basic sight words, and developing fluency with accuracy.
My Project
Providing my students with specialized instruction on the underlying skills of reading, I have seen an increase in their decoding and motivation since the beginning of the school year. However, I find that they are missing one piece of the puzzle...Comprehension.
I work with students who not only struggle with basic decoding skills but have difficulties with listening and reading comprehension as well.
How many times have my students asked, "What was that story about?" after reading a passage. This tends to happen on a daily basis as my students become involved with literature. I find that when they are presented with a passage, strategies are necessary for them to retain information about the text. These include breaking it down into smaller chunks at a time and frequent questioning to check for understanding. When having a longer passage they tend to encounter difficulties with holding pertinent details for a extended amount of time which interferes with retelling or answering questions about what they read.
Working in this environment, I have the opportunity of having a host of research based programs that address the missing gaps of beginning literacy skills but do not have access to adequate resources that address reading comprehension. I will like to focus more on this area by providing my students with appropriate material they need in order to strengthen their understanding of text and help develop the joy of reading. By doing this, they will have the skills they need in order to become productive individuals within society.
